A whistleblower has disclosed an official investigation that the UK failed to secure classified technology permitting the Taliban to locate Afghans that had served with western forces.
Person A, known as Person A, explained that Afghans affected by the security lapse were instructed to change residences and change their contact details to ensure their safety from the ruling authorities.
Lawmakers are currently examining the Conservative government's handling of a massive breach of confidential data concerning approximately 19k Afghans who had requested to move to the UK to escape the regime.
An electronic document with confidential details, such as names, contact details and sometimes household data, was inadvertently disclosed by a worker working at British military command in February 2022.
The leak was discovered in late 2023, when the names of nine people who had sought to move to Britain surfaced on social media.
Many believe there's this misconception that militant forces lack the same sort of facilities that western nations possess,” the whistleblower testified to MPs.
“We left it all behind in Afghanistan; it's in their hands. Once they acquire your phone number, they can locate your exact position. That is what the unit accomplished.”
Under inquiry about if militant forces possessed sophisticated technology, the whistleblower declared: “They possess all resources.”
Early investigations provided to the committee indicated that at least 49 family members and co-workers of people concerned by the leak had been executed.
A gag order concerning the leak was implemented in last year and blocked relevant facts about it from being made public until mid-2025.
Given injunction limitations, the source and the volunteer organization associated with told individuals at risk they were working with that they had “suspicions that mobile communications had been breached”.
“We advised that they change residence when possible and altered their phone numbers. Those were the primary information that, if authorities obtained such data, would cause their location being found,” Person A explained.
The source contested that internal investigation performed by a retired civil servant had been mistaken to state that the possession of the dataset by the regime was “minimally impact present danger”.
“The important fact is that affected people are in hiding from the authorities; they are in hiding. The primary issue involves past work history.”
She detailed disturbing abuse experienced by affected individuals, comprising electrocution, interrogation techniques, and violent assaults.
“We have had young kids who have had limbs fractured to force the family to say where someone is,” Person A stated.
