Anthony Barry Shares His Philosophy: Wearing England's Shirt Should Be Like a Cape, Not Armour.

In the past, Anthony Barry competed for Accrington Stanley. Currently, he's dedicated on helping Thomas Tuchel claim the World Cup trophy in the upcoming tournament. The road from player to coach commenced through volunteering coaching youngsters. He remembers, “Evening sessions, a partial pitch, organizing 11-a-side
deflated balls, scarce bibs,” and he was hooked. He discovered his destiny.

Metoric Climb

Barry's progression is incredible. Beginning as Paul Cook’s assistant, he established a reputation with creative training and strong interpersonal abilities. His stints with teams took him to elite sides, while also serving in coaching jobs abroad with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. His players include legends including top footballers. Currently, in the England setup, he's fully immersed, the “pinnacle” according to him.

“Everything starts with a dream
Yet I'm convinced that dedication shifts obstacles. You dream big but then you bring it down: ‘How can we achieve it, day-by-day, step-by-step?’ We dream about winning the World Cup. But dreams won’t get it done. We must create a structured plan enabling us for optimal success.”

Focus on Minutiae

Dedication, focusing on tiny aspects, characterizes his journey. Toiling around the clock day and night, he and Tuchel test boundaries. Their methods feature psychological profiling, a heat-proof game model ahead of the tournament in North America, and fostering teamwork. The coach highlights the national team spirit and avoids language like “international break”.

“This isn't a vacation or a pause,” Barry notes. “It was vital to establish a setup that attracts the squad and they're pushed that it’s a breather.”

Driven Leaders

The assistant coach says along with the manager as extremely driven. “We aim to control every aspect of the game,” he states. “We seek to command the whole ground and that's our focus many of our days on. We must to not only anticipate of changes and to lead and set new standards. It's an ongoing effort focused on finding solutions. And to clarify complicated matters.

“We get 50 days with the players ahead of the tournament. We must implement a sophisticated style for a tactical edge and explain it thoroughly in that period. We need to progress from concept to details to knowledge to execution.

“To develop a process enabling productivity during the limited time, we must utilize all the time available after our appointment. During periods without the team, we need to foster connections among them. We must dedicate moments in calls with players, observing them live, understand them, connect with them. If we limit ourselves to that time, it's impossible.”

Final Qualifiers

The coach is focusing on the last two for the World Cup preliminaries – versus Serbia in London and in Albania. England have guaranteed a spot in the tournament with six wins out of six with perfect defensive records. But there will be no easing off; quite the opposite. This is the time to strengthen the squad's character, to maintain progress.

“The manager and I agree that the football philosophy must reflect everything that is good from the top division,” he comments. “The athleticism, the flexibility, the strength, the honesty. The national team shirt needs to be highly competitive but light to wear. It ought to be like a superhero's cape instead of heavy armour.

“To ensure it's effortless, we need to provide an approach that enables them to move and run as they do in club games, that feels natural and encourages attacking play. They need to reduce hesitation and more in doing.

“You can gain psychological edges you can get as a coach at both ends of the pitch – starting moves deep, closing down early. However, in midfield of the pitch, those 24 metres, it seems football is static, especially in England's top flight. Everybody has so much information currently. They can organize – mid-blocks, deep blocks. Our aim is to increase tempo across those 24 metres.”

Thirst for Improvement

The coach's thirst for improvement is relentless. During his education for the top coaching badge, he had concerns over the speaking requirement, since his group contained luminaries such as Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick. For self-improvement, he sought out difficult settings he could find to improve his talks. One was HMP Walton locally, where he also took inmates during an exercise.

Barry graduated with top honors, and his dissertation – focusing on set-pieces, where he studied numerous set-plays – got into print. Lampard was among those convinced and he hired Barry on to his staff with the Blues. After Lampard's dismissal, it spoke volumes that Chelsea removed virtually all of his coaches while keeping Barry.

His replacement at Stamford Bridge took over, within months, he and Barry won the Champions League. When Tuchel was dismissed, Barry remained in the setup. Once Tuchel resurfaced in Germany, he recruited Barry from Chelsea and back alongside him. English football's governing body consider them a duo similar to Southgate and Holland.
