A bulky bluefin tuna created waves at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, achieving a historic bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2m; £2.4m) during the market's opening auction of the calendar year.
The winning offer for the 535-pound fish was placed by the parent firm of a well-known sushi chain, which runs restaurants throughout Japan and abroad.
"An inaugural tuna heralds fortune," stated the company president, a notable participant at the traditional January sale.
Known as the Tuna King, this entrepreneur is noted for submitting high bids for bluefin tuna at these auspicious January auctions.
After the auction, the winner admitted to journalists that he was "astonished at the winning bid," noting, "I believed we would be able to purchase it a little at a lower price, but the price soared rapidly."
This new acquisition surpasses his own record purchases:
Despite once remarking that he thought he "bid too high," he has now proceeded to break his personal record once again.
The inaugural auction at the Tokyo fish market is notoriously characterized by exorbitant prices. In the prior year, the first tuna was purchased for 207 million yen by another food company, which announced the fish would be available at its locations across Japan.
The intense atmosphere at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has evolved into a must-see spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was no different.
The record-priced tuna was shortly thereafter sliced up for patrons at the winner's sushi restaurants immediately after the auction concluded.
"I believe like I've begun the year in a auspicious way after consuming something so fortune-bringing as the year gets underway," shared one satisfied patron.
