The offspring of previous South African Head of State Zuma has pleaded not guilty to terror-linked allegations at the commencement of her court case in the harbor city of the city of Durban.

Zuma-Sambudla, forty-three, is being charged over comments she published on social media several years back during deadly unrest in South Africa that occurred subsequent to the detention of her dad.

A period of disorder in various areas of the country in the summer of 2021, including plundering and arson, left at least 300 killed and resulted in damage worth an projected $2.8 billion (2.2 billion pounds).

Zuma-Sambudla has been accused of fuelling this turmoil and confronts allegations of provocation to commit terrorism and civil unrest.

History of the Legal Matter

The unrest were centered in the areas of the Gauteng province and KZN and were triggered by the former president's arrest for disobeying a judicial ruling to give evidence at an inquiry into claims of impropriety while he was holding office.

She has consistently denied the allegations against her, with her legal representative in the past describing the prosecution's legal argument as weak.

She has also frequently claimed the accusations against her were an effort to resolve political disputes with her father after he established his own political organization and campaigned against the ANC.

Endorsement and Legal Defense

This was echoed by the Jacob Zuma foundation, which said the legal matter was an "abuse of power" and a "organized effort" of "politically motivated and kinship harassment" against the former president and his kin.

A handful of supporters from her party, uMkhonto weSizwe, appeared outside the judicial building, while her parent and other group representatives participated in the hearings inside.

The defendant's representatives has maintained that the proof presented by government lawyers is unconvincing and lacks substantial proof for a criminal finding.

Key Points of the Case

  • Social media posts from 2019 form the foundation of the prosecution's evidence
  • Deadly protests in July 2021 resulted in major deaths and economic destruction
