Three members of law enforcement perished and more than a dozen additional individuals got wounded in an apparently intentional gas explosion at a rural property in the northern part of Italy.
The blast was triggered as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the residence close to the city of Verona to enforce an court-ordered eviction for two brothers and a sister aged in their 50s and 60s.
Each of the three officers killed belonged to the Italian military police.
A man and a woman were arrested at the location and another man who fled subsequent to the incident was located shortly later. The trio have been transported to hospital.
The blast could be audible some 5km (3 miles) away and images from the location displayed the structure reduced to a heap of debris.
“We are in a period of mourning,” stated the Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who noted that previous tries had been made to remove the brother and sister trio in the earlier times.
The president of the Veneto area, Luca Zaia, explained the property was facing an court order due to financial obligations accrued by the three owners.
Conflict resolution experts had been dispatched to engage the siblings who had locked themselves into the house. When the police arrived just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators believe one of the residents triggered the blast.
“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” local police chief Commander Papagno stated to news outlets.
“A gas cylinder had been activated, and the explosion immediately struck our members,” he added.
Incendiary devices were also discovered at the property, the Interior Minister stated.
Injured individuals by the incident comprised 11 other members of the military police as well as three members of national police and a firefighter.
As stated by the Verona prosecutor, the property was in a poor condition and had lacked electrical service.
The official was convinced the detonation had happened on a floor above the access point and stated to journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Just prior to the incident, he said officers had “noticed a hissing sound, likely the gas cylinders being activated”.
“We all knew the situation was dire,” nearby inhabitants stated to reporters, adding that the trio had earlier warned to “detonate the property” rather than vacate the property.
“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”
The Defense Minister the Defence Minister united with other elected representatives in honoring the trio of personnel who had been killed in the performance of their duties.
