Ex-Treasury chief the Harvard professor is leaving the governing body at the artificial intelligence firm, just days after a batch of electronic messages between him and deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein became widely known.
The economist commented in a release that he was "grateful for the chance to have served, optimistic about the promise of the enterprise, and anticipate following their advancement".
The former Harvard president, who previously presided over Harvard University, stated on Monday that he would be scaling back from public roles due to his relationship with the convicted sex offender.
The freshly disclosed communications showed that the economist communicated with Jeffrey Epstein until the day before Epstein's 2019 detention for alleged sex trafficking of minors.
In another announcement, the artificial intelligence company expressed it respected Summers' choice to depart.
"We appreciate his significant contributions and the viewpoint he provided to the directors," the company commented.
This news arrives after both chambers of Congress decided on Tuesday to approve a bill that would compel the federal prosecutors to make public its files on Jeffrey Epstein.
The legislation will then move to the administration of the White House for approval. He has indicated he plans to approve the legislation, after changing his stance on the subject following pressure from his base.
A collection of financier-linked messages released by the Congressional committee recently referenced numerous well-known personalities in the billionaire's former circle, without implying any criminal activity by those people.
The messages revealed that the economist and Epstein often met for meals, with the billionaire often trying to introduce Summers to notable world leaders.
After the messages were shared with the wider community, the former official expressed he assumed "full responsibility for my ill-advised choice to continue corresponding with Mr Epstein".
He further stated that he desired "to reestablish confidence and repair bonds with the persons nearest to me".
The professor served in high-level positions under party leaders; serving as economic leader under President Clinton, and as head of the economic advisory body under the former leader.
He presided over the university from five years and remains a faculty member there. When stating his departure from public roles earlier on Monday, he stated he would persist with his educational duties.
Following the economist's statement on Monday, the Washington think tank, a progressive policy institute in Washington where the professor was a researcher, announced that Summers was not associated with the institution.
Summers became part of the board of OpenAI, which makes the AI chatbot, in 2023 - following a failed attempt to replace its chief executive OpenAI's head.
