Israelis have gathered across the country to commemorate 24 months since the Hamas-initiated assault on October 7th, 2023, as discussions advanced in the neighboring country over an end to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
The assault resulted in in excess of 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the uniquely most fatal day for Jewish people since the World War II.
Israel reacted by initiating a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its statistics are seen as accurate by the UN and other international bodies.
"Our aggressive enemies have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," the leader remarked on that day.
He also vowed to "realize all the aims of the war: the return of all the kidnapped, the destruction of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will never again present a danger to Israel".
The government authorities postponed formal memorials until 16 October - after the end of the religious holiday season - but ceremonies still took place across the country on that day.
A remembrance service for the loved ones of people who died in the Hamas incident was organized in the coastal city. Arranged by the affected families, it was aired throughout Israeli TV networks.
Some time earlier, a silent tribute was observed around the country.
Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' representatives met in the Egyptian coastal city of the Egyptian city for a follow-up session of mediated discussions to examine the provisions of the proposal.
A senior representative involved in the negotiations indicated that an late session of negotiations commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.
The representative explained the earlier meeting concluded without concrete outcomes, due to differences over the suggested Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not resume fighting after the opening period of the arrangement.
He commented that the discussions are "challenging and have yet to produce any major advancement," but noted that facilitators are striving to close the gaps between the two sides.
In the city's memorial area that day, young Hagar - whose sibling lived through the incident on the gathering, where hundreds were lost their lives and many more were captured by Hamas militants - explained: "No place appears as home any longer and until each abducted person come back no one will have peace of mind."
"When we see everyone home returned, we can feel relief once more. Then we can start to rebuild," she added.
In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in Jerusalem, people congregated to show their backing for the families of the captives. Israel reports nearly fifty remain in confinement in Gaza, twenty of whom are believed to be surviving.
Activist a participant explained: "We need do any agreement needed for the abducted to return. But we truly desire guarantees that we will be protected."
Opinion polls now regularly indicate that about seventy percent of Israelis want the war to end in as payment for the liberation of the abducted.
At the site of the gathering, mourners came together to remember the victims.
From that location, the sound of military attacks and explosions could be detected just a short distance away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the intense Israeli shelling carried on.
In Gaza City, air and artillery strikes were documented in the morning of Tuesday in the west side Tal al-Hawa, sector and locality neighbourhoods and in the east side district of the community, as well the camp to the northwestern area.
"When the dusk falls, the anxiety appears with it," relocated Gaza City resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was died by an Israeli air strike earlier, shared.
"We are fearful of the bombings. Throughout the evening we are resting together, clinging, especially my smallest child who puts his face on me throughout the night."
"Constantly we check the news to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be finalized and that the war will return to us."
Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area reported it had taken in the corpses of six people by the daytime, including a trio who lost their lives in an Israeli strike in the south part area.
Another medical facility in the southern city of the city indicated additional dead people had been delivered. An individual was killed by Israeli soldiers while looking for assistance to the south region, health workers stated.
