Miami Heat & Trail Blazers Secure First Wins After Recent Arrests

NBA game action

The Miami Heat scored 86 first-half points against the Grizzlies

The Heat secured a overwhelming 146-114 win against the Grizzlies in their first basketball game since guard Terry Rozier was detained for suspected illegal gambling.

Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups was also arrested as part of a sweeping FBI investigation into sports betting. Both men contest the allegations.

However, the Heat were not distracted as they scored eighty-six first-half points to be ahead of Memphis by 39 after two quarters, the largest half-time advantage in the franchise's 37-year existence.

Bam Adebayo led the way with twenty-four points and afterwards said Terry had the support of the team.

"We support him. Complete backing," Adebayo said. "We are with him all the way. He's like family at the end of the day."

Heat coach Spoelstra added: "Terry is somebody who is important to all of us. He's had a real positive impact on our team.

"Our thoughts are with him and our care for him as he faces the situation."

Portland also won their first game since the detentions, with Brazilian Tiago Splitter stepping in as interim coach in Billups' absence and guiding the squad to a convincing 139 to 119 victory over the Golden State Warriors.

"Everyone experienced great experiences with Billups and his coaching style," Tiago remarked. "We're thinking of him and his loved ones but we have a job to do."

League Commissioner Adam Silver 'Upset' over Recent Events

Addressing the arrests for the initial occasion, league head Silver said he was "deeply disturbed" by the events of the recent days.

"Nothing is more critical to the NBA and its fans than the integrity of the competition," he informed a broadcaster. "And so I felt uneasy. It was disturbing."

Silver also said an NBA investigation into Rozier's conduct in March 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a match he participated for the Hornets against the Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.

"It was brought to our attention by the regulators and the gambling firms," he added.

"We investigated that situation and were open about it. And while there was that aberrational betting, we, frankly, couldn't find anything.

"The federal government has legal authority... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can take various actions that the NBA can't do.

"Therefore, we've been working with them since then. And, of course, what they revealed recently was an indictment.

"Moreover two and a half years later, he has not been found guilty of anything, in fairness to Rozier.

"Obviously, it appears unfavorable, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a compromise here between protecting people's rights and conducting an inquiry."
