USDA officials declared this past weekend that SNAP funds through a critical national support systems will not be distributed during the coming month due to the ongoing federal government shutdown.
The funding lapse was in nearly a month when the announcement was made, in response to demands from hundreds of Congressional Democrats urging the department to access reserve accounts to cover November's food assistance.
“Bottom line, funds are depleted,” officials announced. “Now, no payments will be distributed” beginning in November.
Over 40 million Americans rely on these monthly payments, as reported by federal data. Some regions, including New Mexico, use of SNAP reaches a significant portion of citizens.
Documents reviewed by Reuters indicated that federal authorities would not access reserve funds to cover next month's assistance.
Congressional leaders continue to disagree over how to fund and reopen the federal government.
Remarks from the leader of a budget research center suggested that the administration had opportunities to act sooner to avoid interruption in payments.
“Officials were able and expected to acted weeks ago to get ready to utilize available money,” the remarks concluded. “Rather, they might decide against it in an effort to gain political advantage” as conservative leaders work to push upper chamber Democrats to support legislation that would resume government operations.
State leaders from Louisiana and Virginia activated emergency protocols in recent days to free up resources to address food insecurity preparing for SNAP benefits not being issued during the upcoming period.
