Rescued from Ukraine Lioness Undergoes Critical Dental Operation
The Big Cat Sanctuary
An adolescent female lion saved from conflict-ridden Ukraine has undergone vital dental surgery to remove a badly decayed canine tooth caused by an infection.
Lira arrived at a wildlife sanctuary in Smarden, Kent on March 14 after a fundraising effort by managing director Cam Whitnall, who collected £500,000 to fund her and several other lions from Ukraine.

The procedure was performed on Friday by dentist an experienced animal dentist, who has treated about 450 big cats.
"When I examined the lioness's oral cavity, I could see right away the damaged fang was severely infected," stated Mr Kertesz.
He thought the dental issue was due to a injury experienced over twelve months back, causing germs producing harmful substances within the fang.
"The approach I follow is non-human oral health issues should be addressed in the most predictable, the most conservative and safest way," he said.
The expert explained that as Lira no longer required to hunt for food, removal was the most "logical and humane option."
The Animal Rescue Facility
The sanctuary said the removed fang was 3.14 inches in length, with Mr Kertesz having to extract a pocket of pus from beneath the tooth and seal the large wound with seven dissolving sutures.
He also performed a dental procedure on the corresponding top fang, which was discovered to have a similar issue.
Briony Smith, manager at The Big Cat Sanctuary, declared the operation was a "complete success."
She said the team had spotted "a minor swelling on the lioness's face" but it had been difficult to determine "the extent of the problem."
"Lira will be somewhat sore to initially, but now that the infectious materials are out of her body, she will start to feel much better over the next few days," commented Ms Smith.
The successful surgery marks a significant step in Lira's recovery after her rescue from Ukraine.
