The network's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Major Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.

Last October, Adult Swim welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the network launched a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. During a period often marked by bleakness, this show's sincerity resonated deeply and turned it into a surprise hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

In mid-December, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three respectful teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.

"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

Network Praise

In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming appeal.

"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about following this charming family navigate their everyday routines.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

Future Seasons

Now, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
