This latest animated series, the most recent animated series from the beloved role-playing group, unveiled an exciting opening credits. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, misfits, and criminals kicking ass and taking names, while also hinting at several agonizing personal histories for characters including Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, the character Fjord.
All in all, the intro looks amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was missing in the song choice.
The intro uses "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar composition composed by artist Colm McGuinness. It's a track originating from the official score of the same name, the second one released by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label their music brand. It's a wonderful nostalgic choice, and I suspect that devotees of the sequel series will love its presence.
Personally, The series' opening fails to capture the excitement and energy that accompanied the second campaign's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", written by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic for me when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it improved further when cast member Sam Riegel added lyrics to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.
Including singing from one actress, another performer, a co-star, as well as the writer, the song was catchy and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't seen the second campaign yet, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my phone. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an episode of fantasy hijinks.
The Mighty Nein's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the same chords in my opinion. It's a grand composition, but from what I know of this party, I can't help but feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, the creators has already said that the animated show will have a few changes and differences from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its intro seems to be among these.
The Mighty Nein will be released on Prime Video from November 19. If you can't wait until then, or want a head start to learn about the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are accessible on Spotify and YouTube.
