While perhaps not at the identical stature as sparing festive fowl, but the Miami-Dade County mayor had her own presidential-style act this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. Clemency is justified for her. No offenses are on her docket,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with obvious nods to the extraordinary and sizable number of pardons issued from the start of the onset of a new presidential term.
“Except perhaps for eating half a dozen apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “I hope she experiences a long and happy life without fear.”
The event, which both honors and questions the local cultural practice of consuming swine during the holidays, was established to mirror the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The animal, provided by a Coral Gables firefighter, was given its name from the popular vernacular phrase of young people yelling “6-7” – inspired by a musical verse – often without clear purpose. The trend became so widespread that a leading lexicon site recently made “6-7” its top term for the year.
Six Seven the pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a rural sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The annual pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to kick off the festive period,” said Eric Castellanos, in a notably cheerful message.
“It captures the character of Miami: joyful, diverse, and grounded in customs that unite the community. Annually, we are proud to celebrate culture and compassion in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Participants enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach fritters and strong coffee as they toasted Six Seven’s big moment.
