A large-scale search and recovery mission is currently in progress in the Caribbean Sea for a pair of lost sailing vessels transporting humanitarian supplies traveling from the Mexican coast to the island of Cuba.

Military Search and Rescue Efforts Deployed

The Mexican government has sent naval assets and search planes to find the two vessels, which were had on board at least 9 personnel, per a official statement.

The ships had been scheduled to reach Havana on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and no official word of their arrival, authorities reported.

The Situation of Relief to the Island

The Caribbean nation has leaned on aid convoys from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the island endures widespread nationwide blackouts.

"Both skippers and their teams are experienced sailors, and the two ships are equipped with suitable safety equipment and communication devices," a spokesperson associated with the mission commented.

The nine individuals on board are from the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexican authorities said it has opened communications with coast guard agencies from those nations along with their diplomatic representatives.

"We are working closely with the relevant authorities and are still optimistic in the capability of the sailors to reach Havana safely," the spokesperson added.

Previous Aid Shipment

Just days before, the Cuban authorities publicly celebrated and greeted with fanfare a separate vessel that had carried 14 tonnes of donated goods to the country.

That ship, nicknamed "a modern Granma" in reference to the boat in which the revolutionary leader came back to Cuba to launch the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s, delivered solar panels, medicines, formula milk, bikes and food.

Wider Geopolitical Climate

Volunteers and NGOs have primarily led initiatives to ship humanitarian aid to Cuba beginning in January, when a energy blockade on the Communist-run nation was initiated.

International organizations have since raised alarms about "dire" lack of essential goods, with over 50k surgeries postponed in Cuba amid energy rationing.

Diplomatic pressure have intensified over the past months, with statements from different representatives highlighting the delicate state of bilateral relations.

Responding to recent comments, a high-ranking government figure insisted that "the governance model of Cuba is non-negotiable."

Accounts suggest that preliminary steps of discussions commenced, although their current progress remains uncertain.

The Mexican navy affirmed it was dedicated to using all of the resources at its reach to discover the vessels and guarantee the well-being of the crews.

As of now, there has been no public statement on the missing boats by the government in Havana.
