The sentencing of political dissident Jimmy Lai, a British national Jimmy Lai to two decades behind bars in Hong Kong has sparked international condemnation. Advocacy bodies and multiple governments have labeled the legal verdicts politically motivated.
UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper remarked that the two-decade sentence amounts to a prison term lasting the rest of his natural life. She characterized the legal case as having political underpinnings via a statute aimed at quieting critics of China. Cooper called on Hong Kong's authorities to end his ordeal and allow his return to his family.
“This ruling highlights how the imprecise and extensive stipulations of Hong Kong’s national security legislation can be interpreted in violation of universal rights standards,” said the UN rights chief Volker Türk.
A European bloc official, Anitta Hipper, said the bloc “condemns” the conclusion of the judicial process and called for his swift liberation without preconditions.
Jimmy Lai, the force that established the now-shuttered Apple Daily tabloid, was detained following the imposition of a disputed security legislation in Hong Kong. The law was passed by China's government after months of pro-democracy protests backed by Lai's media outlet.
He was found guilty on charges including plotting to create inflammatory publications and plotting to collaborate with external actors. The second set of accusations were brought under the national security statute.
His son, Sebastien Lai, conveyed that his father is afraid of passing away in isolation apart from his relatives. Lai's defense lawyers has called him the “globally most notable detainee” currently incarcerated.
Sebastien Lai said that while the verdict was anticipated, its confirmation was more painful than imagined, yet it provided some “relief” that the legal proceedings had concluded.
This ruling has influenced diplomatic ties between London and Beijing. The UK's head of government Keir Starmer said he discussed Lai’s case during a meeting with China's leader Xi Jinping recently. Nevertheless, the extent of progress towards his release is not known.
Sebastien Lai queried the value of improved bilateral relations between the UK and China, remarking it felt “a bit tone deaf.”
Conversely, the officials from China applauded the court's decision. Hong Kong’s top official John Lee stated the sentence manifested that “justice is served.”
An official representing China’s external affairs office, Lin Jian, described Lai as the “chief architect” behind past unrest and asserted the prosecution was “proper and within the law.” He urged other nations to refrain from intervention in the nation's domestic matters.
Organizations like Reporters Without Borders called Lai as a figure representing eroding press liberties in Hong Kong. The organization's director general remarked it was a “bleak moment for those who value a liberty of the press.”
Given an almost 100% success rate in prosecuting national security offences, Lai’s lengthy term is viewed as the toughest yet imposed under the security statute.
