Voting Begins in Holland as Surveys Point to Potential Repeat Victory for Geert Wilders

The polls are open for general elections in the Netherlands, with current polling data indicating that the anti-immigration leader Geert Wilders and his PVV party could once again emerge victorious, though analysts suggest PVV is unlikely of joining the future coalition.

Survey Results and Election Dynamics

The PVV, which in the last election pulled off a surprise top result and established a four-party right-leaning coalition that lasted barely a year, is currently slightly leading in surveys and is forecast to secure between 24 to 28 MPs in the 150-member parliament.

However, the far-right party's support has declined since 2023, when it won 37 seats. Every significant political group have publicly ruled out forming a government with the PVV leader, and who precipitated the collapse of the previous government in June over disagreements concerning his radical anti-refugee plans.

Major Parties and Projections

At the end of a election period dominated by topics such as immigration, medical expenses, and the country's severe housing shortage, the centre-left GL/PvdA coalition, led by former European commissioner Frans Timmermans, is placed a near second, expected to win between 22 to 26 parliamentary seats.

Also performing well is the liberal-progressive D66, projected to increase its seat count nearly fivefold to 21 to 25 seats, while the centre-right CDA is anticipated to significantly increase its seat tally to between 18 and 22.

Members of the previous government – which included the Freedom Party, liberal-conservative VVD, populist Farmer-Citizen Movement (BBB), and NSC – are all forecast to lose seats, with several facing heavy losses.

Voting Process and Political Division

In the proportional Dutch system, securing just less than one percent of the national vote earns a party one MP. Of the 27 parties participating in the vote – which include parties for the over-50s, youth parties, for animals, for a universal basic income, and for sport – as many as 16 could enter the legislature.

This significant fragmentation ensures that no single party is ever likely to secure a majority, and the Netherlands has been ruled by coalitions – often including several groups in recent governments – for over 100 years.

Post-Election Scenarios

Wilders has stated that "democracy will be dead" in the country if the PVV ends up as the largest party yet is shut out of government. But, critics and analysts say that first place does not guarantee a role in the coalition and that any coalition with a majority is a democratic outcome.

Although the final outcome is uncertain and coalition talks may require months, political observers indicate that after the most extreme government in recent memory, the future government is likely to be a inclusive coalition led by either the centre-left or moderate right.

Voting Process

Voting locations, such as those in the miniature city Madurodam in The Hague and the Anne Frank museum in Amsterdam, opened at 7:30 AM (6.30am GMT) and will close at 9pm. A typically reliable post-voting survey is expected shortly after the polls close.

After the vote, an official negotiator will explore possible coalitions that could command a majority in parliament. Prospective coalition members will then negotiate an agreement for the next four years and must undergo a confidence vote in parliament before assuming power.
