The local council stated they were unable to take off the eyes without damaging the artwork.

A teenager from the Land Down Under has appeared in court after reportedly vandalizing a sizable art piece of a legendary being by applying plastic eyes to it.

Amelia Vanderhorst, aged 19, participated remotely at the local court in South Australia on that day, charged with one count of property damage.

Officials commented at the moment of the recent event, the local council explained that CCTV footage captured a individual putting artificial eyes on the sculpture, which residents have dubbed the “Blue Blob”.

Ms Vanderhorst made no plea and informed the judge she was ill, according to news outlets, with the magistrate recommending her to find a legal representative before her next court date in the final month of the year.

The following day the alleged incident, the city leader said that repairs to the popular community sculpture would be expensive as the adhesive eyes were impossible to be removed without harming the sculpture.

“This wilful damage to a valued community art is unacceptable and disrespectful,” City of Mount Gambier mayor said in September. “It is not innocent amusement, it is pricey - it is also frustrating to those members of our society who have welcomed the Blue Blob.”

The mayor added the council would seek the “significant” restoration expenses from those accountable for the vandalism.

At the time the artwork was initially suggested, it drew varied responses from the area residents due to its cost and design.

Costing A$136,000 ($89,000; £68,000), the artwork depicts a mythical megafauna, with the creators inspired by an ancient anteater-like marsupial discovered in local caves that was “massive, lumbering and fascinating”.
